Septic tank abandonment for Cape Coral’s UEP
The City’s sewer letter starts two legal clocks. A licensed hauler pumps the tank first; the owner, a licensed septic installer, or a licensed plumbing contractor handles the permit and destruction.
The two clocks, plainly
- 180 days from the Notice of Availability date to connect to sewer
- 90 days after connection to abandon the septic tank
- Licensed hauler pumps the tank and documents disposal
- Owner, installer, or plumber pulls the permit and crush-and-fills
- City inspection closes out the abandonment
Step by step after the letter arrives
1. Read the date on your Notice of Availability. That printed date — not the day you opened the envelope — starts the 180-day clock to connect to public sewer.
2. Connect to sewer. A plumber or utility contractor makes the connection. The connection date starts the second clock: 90 days to abandon the old tank.
3. A licensed hauler pumps the tank. The pumping company empties the tank and hauls the contents to a DEP-approved receiving facility. Confirm any documentation needed for the abandonment file before service.
4. Permit and crush-and-fill. The property owner, a licensed septic installer, or a licensed plumbing contractor pulls the City permit, crushes or removes the tank, and fills the void.
No letter yet?
City projections can move. If your neighborhood has not received Notices of Availability, keep maintaining the system you have — a pumped, healthy tank is the right starting point whenever the letter arrives.
Common questions
Can I prepare before sewer connection?
Yes. If your area is scheduled for sewer, keep the existing tank maintained until connection. Confirm the abandonment sequence with the City before destroying the tank.
Who does what in an abandonment?
The pumping company pumps the tank and documents disposal. The owner, installer, or plumber handles the permit and the crush-and-fill. The City inspects and closes the file.
What if I miss the deadline?
The deadlines come from the City, and enforcement is their call. Schedule the pump-out as soon as the connection date is set because contractor calendars can fill quickly during a neighborhood conversion.
